Photoshop Tutorial - The Perspective Crop

The Typical Scenario

Sometimes we've got a rectangular shape in perspective that we need to extract from a photograph. The first step in this process is to crop/copy the region and distort the image so it fills your rectangular canvas.

I've created a short video tutorial on how to use this tool:

The written tutorial is below:

Crop Process: The Hard Way

This process is sometimes tricky; in a typical scenario, you may free transform the layer, and this can be a bit finicky when using the Free Transform tool. As you can see, it takes quite a few trys to get the transformation box distorted in just the right way.

Steps using Free Transform: Crop, then Free Transform, then tweak, and tweak, and tweak... That's just not fun at all! Steps using Free Transform: Crop, then Free Transform, then tweak, and tweak, and tweak... That's just not fun at all!

The Perspective Option

The crop tool has a great little feature (in the form of the Perspective checkbox) that will allow you to straighten an image as you crop it. This option can save a lot of time, as it will virtually eliminate all of the tweaking usually required. Note: This checkbox only appears after you have drawn your crop area!

Crop Process: The Easy Way

Here we have created a crop box, checked the Perspective option, distorted the crop rectangle, and then applied the crop. The great thing about this technique is that there are only three steps involved: Create the crop rectangle, adjust the four corners to match the corners in your image, and crop!
